Socio-Economic Contrast Charts
Data Set:  Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF 3) - Sample Data

Each .pdf file is a 32-page report (charts and tables) depicting socio-economic characteristics by race and ethnicity from the 2000 census -- including percentage calculations. Over 7,500 files are posted. The charts and accompanying interactive maps were prepared for local groups who need to present census info quickly and don't have access to desktop GIS software.

The charts were posted in the fall of 2002 -  thousands have been downloaded. Some have been filed as exhibits in  federal courts for civil rights or voting rights litigation in Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi,  New York, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Wyoming.

The SocioEcon Mapper has also been online since 2002. Until the launch of PolicyMap in May 2008, FairData was the only free publicly available source for nationwide block group-level interactive maps showing socioeconomic characteristics. We encourage all users of the SocioEcon Mapper to check out PolicyMap.

Note: FairData maps are not compatible with FireFox 1.5 or 2.0 (click for details)..

(350K -- Adobe format ) Requires the free Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher.

Social Explorer is another excellent source for tract-level and higher maps and tables from the 1990 and 2000 census. (In many instances, the maps are superior to PolicyMap maps  because more meaningful thematic breakpoints are used.)
