Hampton Roads Mapper 2000-2010

The initial map shows median household income by county and tract, according to the 2005 to 2009 American Community Survey conducted by the US Census Bureau.

As you zoom in from the regional census tract-level map, block groups display at 50 miles, and streets at 5 miles. Zoom out to view a nationwide county map.

Additional maps include 2010 and 2000 census data on ethnicity, education, and income.  Change maps by clicking the drop-down menu under "Compare Maps" on the left.

The Hampton Roads Mapper has  been online since 2002.  Until the launch of PolicyMap in May 2008, FairData was the only free publicly available source for nationwide block group-level interactive maps showing socioeconomic characteristics. We encourage all users of FairData maps to check out PolicyMap or Social Explorer.

Map 14  -- Voter Registration in old 4th Congressional District

For precinct and block-level registered voter estimates (query with Info tool)  use the Virginia voter registration interactive maps

Geocoded to block level -- based on early 2001 registration data in Congressional District 4 prior to the 2001 redistricting. Approximately 3% of registered voters are excluded due to geocoding inaccuracies. Additional discrepancies between 2001 voter data and the 2000 census result in some blocks showing more voters than voting age population. No adjustments have been made for prison populations. Precinct boundaries (VTDs) do not reflect changes made in 2001.Block-level themes display at 5 miles, political party charts at 3 miles.

At a scale of about 5 miles, counts for the under 19 population  below the 185% poverty level are displayed in purple boxes.

The block group level 185% poverty dataset can also be viewed via the USDA Summer Food Map Machine. Consistent with the USDA dataset and Map Machine, students under 19 in group housing are included in the 185% counts.

Map 31 -- Language Minority
(18+ non-English speakers who do not speak English "very well")

This thematic map shows voting age  non-English speakers who do not speak English "very well". This category includes all  non-English speakers 18 and over who speak English "well", "not well", or "not at all".

At a scale of about 5 miles , the  number (by block group) of 18+ non-English speaking persons  who do not speak English "very well" is displayed in purple boxes.

Note: The language minority map is not directly comparable to Maps 12 and 13. Those maps show English proficiency by age for Spanish speakers as a percentage  of the Spanish-speaking population, rather than as a percentage of the overall voting age non-English speaking population.  The maps also employ a more restrictive definition  for limited English  -- "speak English not well" or "not at all".

Some official definitions (for instance, Voting Rights Act Sec. 203 language minority coverage) extend the term "limited English"  to include persons who "speak English well".  Under these interpretations,  just one category  -- "Speak English Very Well" -- defines  persons who are considered proficient in English.
